In the South African handicraft sector, there is hardly any significance on the research and development of designs and product innovation. Extensive work must be carried out by the producers to re-orient designs, colours and pattern of the product produced in South Africa to suit the international standards. Ghosh (2012:68) pointed out that, such innovation in design form, skill development, safety, environmental awareness, technical improvement and market development need greater attention for bringing in a change in the traditional handicraft sector. Ghosh further adds that, touching the root and taking the course of any change process for innovation and creativity in this environment calls for a conscious and methodical intervention process. Therefore, to intervene in the case of this traditional handicrafts sector is through a two way intervention process i.e., through the route of innovative technology and craft-design intervention. This study focuses on the possibility of innovative craft-design to aid in the economic development of the local community, and more specifically the development of the creative industry. The objective of the research is to systematically build up, craft-design system that is similar to the principles of sustainability. The paper shows key findings from a literature review and from semi-structured interviews with local producers, supporters, and buyers of handicraft product in Western Cape Province. The last part of the paper present key findings from semi structured interviews. The research methodology used for this research is an ethnographic approach using a qualitative data collection method.
